Macbeth - Monologue

Initially, I used this piece for my university applications. I received positive feedback all around, so I'm keeping Macbeth as part of my repertoire for future auditions. There are two reasons why I chose this piece. Firstly, it showcases my understanding of the traditional style and Shakespearean language. As seen in the video, I act more melodramatic with my voice and gestures to match the style of the piece. In the lead-up to filming this self-tape, I researched the context to understand the plot and found an accurate modern translation online. These two factors are what made my performance accurate. Secondly, I feel that this piece showcases my increasing ability to act more profoundly, from my tone of voice to my mannerisms.

If I used this monologue for an audition, it would be perfect for plays from 'The Royal Shakespeare Company' or 'The Globe Theatre'. Because of the suited style

I Love Betsy - Song

I first performed "I Love Betsy" for a competition and my university auditions earlier this year. From the moment I started rehearsing this piece, I was drawn to Jack's humorous and extroverted personality. When selecting pieces to showcase, I knew that "I Love Betsy" had to be one of them. Not only did I enjoy the character of Jack, but the piece also highlighted my ability to convey emotion through song, combining melodramatic sentimentality with exaggerated gestures.

Jack is head over heels for Betsy, and I realised that portraying a lovestruck romantic was a character type I had never played before, which made it entirely outside my comfort zone. However, after receiving positive feedback on my performance, I wanted to demonstrate that I can successfully act in a sentimental style. If I use this piece in the future, musicals like 'Singing in the Rain' or 'First Date' would be perfect due to their shared themes and singing styles.

All I Need Is The Girl - Song

I performed "All I Need Is The Girl" as my legitimate song for my university auditions. Before preparing for these auditions, I had little to no experience in 'legit' singing. However, after learning various techniques, I now feel much more confident in this style, even though I recognize I still have a lot to learn.

I chose this song to showcase my ability to sing in the 'legit' style. It effectively highlights my vocal range, demonstrating that I can hit both lower, rounder notes and belt out higher ones. Additionally, the confident and suave personality of the character Tulsa contrasts sharply with my portrayal of Jack. If I consider using this song again in the future, it would likely be for legit musicals like "Music Man" or "Hadestown."

Move - Jazz Routine

The self-tape on the left features my jazz routine, which I choreographed for my auditions. I chose to include this piece because it showcases my technical abilities in jazz through various jumps, kicks, and turns. In the video, you can see that I have a strong understanding of the style and performance aspect, as demonstrated by my dynamic movements.

Technical dance is something I have only truly excelled at in the past year, and I am thrilled with my progress, not just in technique but also in flexibility, which is also evident in the performance. Furthermore, this piece contrasts completely with my other dance routine, highlighting my versatility. Although I don't anticipate using this style in the future, if the opportunity arose, it would likely be for something like 'New Adventures,' which is Matthew Bourne's dance company.

Never Tell - Monologue

Of all the pieces I have rehearsed and performed, 'Never Tell' remains my favorite. I had the most fun playing this role because Hoover's character is both eccentric and humorous. I chose this piece because it showcases my comedic timing and understanding of comedic style very effectively. During rehearsals, I incorporated a lot of my personality into Hoover's character, which made the performance feel more relaxed and natural, ultimately leading to a funnier outcome.

I would definitely consider using this piece for future auditions, not only because I find it enjoyable but also because it would be ideal for auditions for musicals or plays like "The Book of Mormon" or "Fawlty Towers," where the comedy can be quite risky. This piece would work perfectly due to its comedic shock factor.

Shake Body - Commercial Routine

I choreographed this piece for my auditions earlier this year, and it has always been one of my favourites due to its high energy and distinctive style. I chose this piece because it showcases my commercial ability and reflects my understanding of the Afrobeat style, even though I am not very familiar with it. This performance highlights my ability to use dynamics, primarily through the contrasts of 'light and shade' that I incorporated into the choreography.

I would consider using this piece in the future because its unique style makes it stand out. If I were to do so, it would be aimed at commercial agencies like 'Dancers Ink' or auditions for jobs such as backup dancing or cruise ships.
